Outline

Love is putting your happiness in the happiness of someone else. Love rejoices when the other person is rejoicing and weeps when they are weeping. Envy is the enemy of love. It is rejoicing when others are weeping and weeping when they are rejoicing. Our Savior, the Lord Jesus, is lowly of heart. His heartbeat in us is the power to love and not envy.

I. LOVE DEFINED
Love is putting your happiness in someone else’s happiness. Rejoicing when they rejoice.

II. LOVE THREATENED
Envy is being pained by someone else’s happiness. Weeping when they rejoice.

III. LOVE SECURED
God’s humility overturns the world.

Discussion Questions

  1. In the sermon we defined love as putting your happiness in the happiness of another. What does that mean? Give an example of a time when you did that. Who is it easy for you to love like that?
  2. Read 1 Cor 12:26 together. Why do you think that is so seldom true of us as a church? What are the hindrances to that kind of togetherness? How can we more reflect Paul’s intention for the church?
  3. Envy is the opposite of love. Envy is rejoicing when someone is weeping. Who are you most likely to envy? Why?
  4. Love and envy are both a matter of the “mind” you live with. Who do you think about the most – yourself or others? How can you change that?
  5. How do you go to war with envy? What are the “gospel weapons” for your fight against this deadly sin?
