Outline

Hook: When is the last time you heard another person say, “I forgive you…”?

I. BLESSING
“The happiness of men consists only in the free forgiveness of sins, for nothing can be more terrible than to have God for our enemy…we don’t perceive how great a happiness it is to enjoy the favor of God, until we have thoroughly felt from grievous conflicts with inward temptations, how terrible the anger of God is.” - John Calvin

II. MISERY
“Joy will never come by denying our deep sinfulness; rather, it must come by seeing how huge our sin really is and how completely it has been dealt with in Christ.” - Barbara Duguid

III. SAFETY
“He only has his sins covered, who does not himself cover them.” - E.W. Hengstenberg

Take-away: “A Christian is someone who believes and feels his own weakness and unworthiness, and lives upon the grace and pardoning love of his Lord. This gives him a habitual tenderness and gentleness of spirit.” - John Newton
