I. THE OCCASION (6:1)
What objection does Paul anticipate to his gospel?
II. THE DOCTRINE (6:2)
How does Paul answer the objection being made about his gospel? What is surprising about his answer?
III. THE ILLUSTRATION (6:3-10)
How does the image of dying and being raised help us understand Paul’s doctrine?
IV. THE EXHORTATION (6:11)
So what?
Discussion Questions
1. Martin Luther said, “Sin boldly!” React to that statement. What do you think he meant?
2. What does it mean to have died to sin (6:2)? What is the difference between sinning and “walking in sin”? Read 1 John 3:9. How do you understand what that verse teaches in light of Romans 6:1-11?
3. Do you have a “But God” story? If so, share it with the group.
4. Practically, how do you “reckon yourself dead to sin but alive to God” (6:11). What does that involve?
